Black Friday around the world

The term „Black Friday” was actually first associated with a financial crisis, not sales shopping. Two Wall Street financiers Jim Fisk and Jay Gould, together bought a significant amount of US gold in the hope of the overall price soaring and in turn being able to sell it for huge profits.

On Friday 24 September, 1869, in what became referred to as „Black Friday”, the US gold market crashed and Fisk and Gould’s actions left Wall Street barons bankrupt.

Along with the UK and USA, the Black Friday sales concept has emerged in other countries across the globe including Brazil, India, France, Norway, Romania and Germany.

In Mexico, they call their version of Black Friday „El Buen Fin”, meaning „the good end” while in the United Arab Emirates, shops cut their prices on what they call „White Friday”. In China, they celebrate their own shopping holiday Single’s day, on November 11.

So why choose a phrase previously associated with stock market crashes to describe a busy shopping day? It’s thought to be because, when shops in the US recorded their accounting details by hand, they noted profits in black and losses in red.

Many shops were „in the red” throughout most of the year but they later „went into the black” the day after Thanksgiving, when shoppers bought a significant amount of discounted merchandise.

Today, Black Friday is the USA’s biggest shopping event of the year, when many shops cut their prices on a range of products, in order to boost profits and officially kick off the festive season.

English has the largest vocabulary of any language in the world. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced speaker of English, you are always growing your vocabulary.  Always encountering tons of new words. And new ways to say words that you already know.

The richer your vocabulary, the more fluently you can speak the language, so you should be learning new words every day.

But when you don’t live in an English speaking country you don’t have nearly as many opportunities to expand your vocabulary in your everyday life. You must create these opportunities for yourself.

These nine suggestions, when practiced together every day, will help you to greatly increase your English speaking capabilities, whether you’ve just started speaking English, or even if you’re fluent in it as your second language:

English has the largest vocabulary of any language, which makes it very rich and colourful.  This is because it has large influence from Latin languages (especially French), Germanic languages (like Dutch, Danish, German and Frisian), and Celtic languages. English is always growing in vocabulary, as it borrows from other languages as well (for example people sometimes substitute “please” for “por favour” because of Spanish influence).

The famous writer, Shakespeare, alone added more than 1,700 words to the English language.

The Internet and technology advances are also having huge influences on English, creating new words every year like YOLO (You Only Live Once), tweeting and meme.

Almost any word you choose has a dozen variations that mean more or less the same thing. In a language like English, a rich vocabulary becomes an important resource, especially when writing.

This three part series of articles will help you with tips on how you can improve you vocabulary daily, so you can start speaking more like a native. So keep reading..

Sorry for the delay. Here is our first tip – keep a word journal.

When I was studying abroad, I was constantly bombarded (hit) by words I didn’t know, and I couldn’t possibly remember them all. I found that keeping a pocket-sized notebook on me at all times is a very useful technique to remember the new words that I would hear. When I didn’t write them down, I’d find myself asking how to say certain words over and over again. My friends would even tell me that they’d already taught me that word. And no one likes to be annoying!

Forgetting words is a pain that you can easily avoid.

Even if you aren’t living in a country where you’re surrounded by the target language, this is still a great idea. Commit to writing down five new words every day, and then review the words every day until you find that they have been integrated into your vocabulary.

If your English is at a more advanced level, I recommend that you don’t simply write down the translation of the new words in your language. Instead, try to draw a picture, write a synonym, note something that will remind you of the new word’s definition, or give an example sentence.

For example, if one of your new words is seagull, you could draw a picture of it, you could write “bird”, you could write “beach”, or you could write “the seagull eats fish out of the ocean”.  By forcing yourself not to translate, you foster a more fluent mindset (attitude).

Your word journal is a great strategy in addition to these other techniques. Let them be the inspiration for your five words each day.

2nd tip – Ted talks and watching in general..

Learning a language is a slow process and can be enhanced by watching programmes in English. At the start it might be difficult to understand but it eventually will register itself in your brain and help you process it in a way that you actually remember it.

There are so many great television shows from the US, the United Kingdom, and Australia. So it’s practically guaranteed you can find one you will enjoy. If you watch with audio and subtitles in English, you can pick up all sorts of vocabulary.

Nowadays almost all programmes can be paused so you can jot down (write) new words and look them up in a dictionary later (if you didn’t understand from the context).
I recommend that you watch TV shows that are related to your profession in order to acquire more technical vocabulary. For example, if you’re a lawyer you can watch Law and Order, a doctor can watch Grey’s Anatomy or House, and scientists can watch the Big Bang Theory. Search for a show that fits your needs in order to have the best results, and create a great strategy to learn with TV.

Movies are great, too, but many of us don’t have time to watch an entire movie several times a week. Watching a television show only takes about 20 minutes.

3rd tip Read!!

Read anything. We can’t emphasize this enough. Newspaper articles, sports articles, books, comic books, magazines and blogs are all great options. If you want to improve your vocabulary this is definitely one of the best ways.

I don’t recommend looking up every word you don’t know while reading because you’ll end up taking a week to finish a single chapter. It won’t be a fun experience. When reading a book, it’s not important that you know every word; you will still understand the main point. And you’ll be surprised how much you understand just through the context.

Just circle words that you don’t know and look them up later.

Some of the best, most impartial news (it doesn’t take a side) is found only in English. The more that you can read and speak English, the better the information that you’ll have access to. Good newspaper or online news publications are the New York Times, the Economist, BBC and CNN. These aren’t all 100 percent free, but they let you see several articles each day without charging you, which is more than enough to put your English to use. Whereas a novel will give you good vocabulary for everyday conversation, the news can give you more technical vocabulary, which is great for your career or just for sounding intelligent!

Blogs are equally great because they exist about every topic. Whatever it is that interests you, you can find a blog on it. The other great thing about blogs is that you can comment, and even get in conversations or debates over certain issues.

Find something to read and start reading it. Your vocabulary bank will increase greatly.

Enter Richard Christmas. He took up the baton by launching a “Chrismas Card” writing campaign. The Michigan native wrote to governors and members of Congress in all 50 states urging them to create National Moon Day. He achieved some success, too. This is probably the most important question you can ask, but the depth and sincerity of your answer will not only determine the quality of your learning experience, but also the reward.

Most people would say that they are learning English for professional reasons, some would say for travel, cultural reasons, or to form relationships, but few people have any idea of the huge impact that English fluency can have upon human consciousness, global inter-connectivity, and the way we perceive ourselves in the world.

English is without a doubt the universal language. This is not a question of linguistic imperialism, but rather the reality of living in a modern, globalized world. Not only is English the international language of business, diplomacy, and tourism, but it can also open your mind to an entirely new perspective on the world.

We call this new perspective Global Citizenship, and it’s a collection of processes, skills, character traits, and attitudes that together form an identity that transcends geographic and political borders to include all of humanity.

We may not be free of borders in the physical sense (yet), but we have the means, the opportunity, and the responsibility to actively participate in an already existing international community and field of awareness that promotes a better, more peaceful, unified, and diplomatic path to solving global problems.

The problems are many, they are severe, and if we are to save ourselves from our own cancerous ways, we must dramatically expand our worldview to make space in our identity for all cultures and religions, to celebrate our differences, but ultimately to recognize that what we have in common as human beings is much, much stronger than what separates us.

As we learn, as we meet people from around the world, and as we open our minds to new cultures, information, experiences, and ways of looking at the world, we unlock the hidden and life-altering potential of learning English: World Citizenship.

1. Communication is the Key / Komunikacja jest kluczem

The first and most immediate effect of English fluency is that you can communicate with people from different cultures, and this alone will transform your perspective. Nothing can replace communication, which is the gateway to true human connection and relationship. Not travel, not education, not intelligence, and not even good information can replace this.

When you truly connect with people from other cultures, you are exposed to the naked truth, which forces you to challenge the beliefs and stereotypes you’ve inherited from your culture and put yourself in their shoes. This makes it increasingly hard to project your fears and misconceptions on others, and you realize that other people from other religions, cultures, and backgrounds are not as different as you once thought.

In fact, your conception of “they” as an external group of people that is different from you starts to dissolve and turn into a “we” that you can identify with. This happens through personal and professional contact, as well as being exposed and enriched by other aspects of different cultures, such as music, food and customs. These are all very significant experiences, but the key that opens the door is speaking the same language.

Although you see that your nation is just one of many and not the absolute reality you previously thought, you discover the uniqueness of your culture and reflect back upon it with much more awareness. This results in a more balanced perspective that permits you to recognize both the positive and the negative inherent in all cultures.

There is nothing more powerful and compelling than a large variety of good information, and no other language contains even close to the quantity and quality of information that the English language does.

The more you read, listen, watch and learn about the world and your country through a variety of alternative media sources, the more you realize that you’ve been misguided your entire life by erroneous, incomplete, and biased information.

The simplified explanation for this is that in any given country the people who control the information control the masses. In fact, around 98% of the corporate mass media in almost any country is controlled by a small group of rich, powerful, and politically connected families that have a vested interest in manipulating the information and misguiding the masses.

Entire wars are even being fought over this.

You must question the information you consume, all information, and open your mind to the multiplicity of perspectives, which is the only way to give birth to a multi-faceted global truth.

With fluent English and access to an internet connection, you can open yourself up to a whole new world of information that will catalyze your worldview and offer you the tools to enrich your perspective with many sources of information, to verify what you hear in your local news, and to constantly be educating and re-educating yourself.

Learning English will greatly facilitate your path up to this point by permitting you to relate to people from all around the world, by helping you see your true place in the world family, and by giving you access to exponentially better sources of alternative information.

The final step, however, has nothing to do with English, but is more of a a personal choice and an ongoing process that demands that we apply what we’ve learned and truly live in integrity with our worldview.

This is different for everybody, and it’s more of a journey than a destination, but to be a global citizen is to apply what you’ve learned to make the world a better place. It means that you see the world, humanity, and nature as holistic and interconnected, and you accept your responsibility for making the world a better place.

Ostatni krok nie ma jednak nic wspólnego z językiem angielskim, ale jest raczej osobistym wyborem i ciągłym procesem, który wymaga zastosowania tego, czego się nauczyliśmy i prawdziwego życia w zgodzie z naszym światopoglądem.

Każdy może odebrać to inaczej i będzie to bardziej podróż niż tylko jej cel, ale bycie obywatelem świata to zastosowanie tego, czego się nauczyłeś, aby uczynić świat lepszym miejscem. Oznacza to, że postrzegasz świat, ludzkość i przyrodę jako połączoną ze sobą całość, i stajesz się odpowiedzialny za uczynienie świata lepszym miejscem.
